Letter from our Director of DEI
Hello! My name is Millie Kitchin, and I am honored to serve as Gamma Phi’s Director of DEI this year!
Alpha Gam must always be an accepting and uplifting place, particularly to those who may not be accepted and uplifted elsewhere, and as director of DEI, my job is to advocate, educate, and promote diversity, equity, and inclusion to our sisters, both to help better our chapter, and to better our community. Given that my position falls under our Vice President of Wellness, these efforts are an integral part of our sisterhood and wellbeing.
During my term thus far, we have made major improvements in terms of our DEI initiatives and incorporating them into all aspects of our chapter. In chapter meetings, I have begun weekly discussions, activities, and general educational talks about a variety of diversity-related topics to educate and engage more of the chapter more frequently. At meal plan, sisters can request that Chef Jess cook culturally or religiously significant dishes that the chapter can enjoy while learning about new cultures, religions, and peoples. In our sisterhood, we have had several DEI events from movie nights to hamantaschen making! Even in our social sphere, we have begun to learn about important topics with other chapters on campus across the different councils.
DEI is something I care deeply about, and through my position, I want to make sure that we aren't just learning about different topics, but actively practicing ways to better ourselves and our community. Our DEI initiatives are not just a box we have to check off, but something we must all be actively working on and using to hold ourselves accountable individually, as a chapter, and within our community.
Our chapter is intentional with the efforts we make to not only provide a safe and welcoming environment for our members, but to educate ourselves on a day-to-day basis. Our activities include:
Monthly educational chapter programming focused on different groups each month
Dining with Diversity - our lovely Chef Jess will prepare meals from a variety of different cultures and our Director of DEI will provide intentional questions to spark a focused conversation between sisters
Mixers with various cultural organizations on campus
Holiday celebrations for events such as Lunar New Year, Purim, end-of-year holidays, and more!
