Letter from our Director of DEI
Hiii! My name is Ira Dhamne, and I’m honored to serve as this year’s Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion here at Alpha Gam!
My role in our chapter is to ensure that every member feels safe, respected, valued, and celebrated in our community. Alpha Gam should always be a space where everyone can be their entire authentic selves, and we should always be working toward improving as individuals & as a chapter.
At its core, DEI is about lifting up voices that haven’t always been heard, and celebrating the diversity of experiences that make our sisterhood stronger. While Greek Life has made significant progress, we cannot ignore its history of exclusivity. That being said, I try to be very intentional with my initiatives as Director of DEI. There is no point where we will be “done” growing in terms of DEI; there is always more we can do to promote inclusivity, kindness, and continued education.
During my term so far, we have increased the number of candid DEI-related events that we have, such as lantern-making for Lunar New Year, Hamantaschen making (a yummy Jewish triangular filled-pocket pastry) to celebrate Purim, and cultural movie nights with various themes. In addition, my committee and I work to give short educational presentations at chapter – a few we have done so far are Disability Awareness & accommodations, Black History Month, and Lunar New Year! We have also been growing our relationships with other organizations on campus, which has been a meaningful way to branch out, build new connections, and continue learning from the communities around us.
I have always felt incredibly passionate about DEI and I’m so grateful that I’ve found a place within this chapter where I can share this passion with my sisters and grow alongside them. I’m so proud of what we’ve accomplished already, and I cannot wait to see how we continue to evolve – DEI and beyond!
Love,
Ira
Our chapter is intentional with the efforts we make to not only provide a safe and welcoming environment for our members, but to educate ourselves on a day-to-day basis. Our activities include:
◦ Frequent educational chapter programming relevant to current holidays and/or events
◦ Mixers with various cultural organizations and Greek chapters on campus
◦ Holiday celebrations for events such as Lunar New Year, Purim, Diwali, and more!
◦ Movie nights: cultural (Bollywood/K-dramas) & relevant to the month (Black History Month/Women’s History Month)
◦ Workshops and discussion-style events
◦ Involvement on campus with groups of AGDs going to cultural & diversity events together!
